CNN —Early results from Ecuador’s referendum suggest President Daniel Noboa has won public backing for security measures aimed at boosting his war on crime. And the good news for Noboa was compounded Monday when police announced they had arrested a notorious alleged gang leader. Both those proposals would require modifying Ecuador’s Constitution, which currently forbids the extradition of Ecuadorians under any circumstances. Gang leader arrestedIn another boost for Noboa, police said in a post on X that they had arrested notorious alleged gang leader Fabricio Colon Pico on Monday morning. Thirty-eight other inmates had escaped along with Colon Pico, of which 12 have since been recaptured, Ecuador’s penitentiary service told CNN.

In Henry’s place, a transitional council will be established and endowed with some powers of the presidency – including the ability to name a new interim prime minister. It is unclear how long it could take to establish a transitional council to begin the transfer of power, though Haiti’s former PM Claude Joseph told CNN that it could be created within 24 hours. The big question is whether these changes can bring calm to Haiti, and put a stop to the terrible violence tearing apart Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. Talks with regional leaders continued, leading into the emergency CARICOM meeting on Monday. CCDH researchers tested AI image generators Midjourney, Stability AI’s DreamStudio, OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus and Microsoft Image Creator. They found that each tool could be prompted to create misleading images related to either US presidential candidates or voting security. The researchers also used common “jailbreaking” techniques to try to get around any potential restrictions on creating misleading images. Overall, researchers say they found that the AI image generators created election disinformation in 41% of their test runs. Overall, the platforms were more likely to produce misleading images related to voting and ballots than of candidates.

Macías’ prison cell is seen in these videos filmed by members of the military last year. Los Choneros and their main rival, Los Lobos, are believed to be allied with Mexican drug cartels in a war for dominance over Ecuador’s drug trade. Los Lobos saw an opening amid a violent power struggle in Los Choneros when Macías became its leader in 2020, say experts. In a music video shared online last year, the Los Choneros leader can be seen petting a rooster, apparently inside Guayaquil prison complex. But the press secretary of Ecuador’s president reckons the Los Choneros leader was told about an impending prison transfer.

The Ballad of Flaco, the Outlaw Who Learned to Fly
  + stars: | 2024-02-02 | by ( Michiko Kakutani | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
The Times’s longtime literary critic says that like all great outlaw-heroes, the escaped Eurasian eagle-owl tapped into our desire to see an underdog claim his freedom. “The Ballad of Flaco” began with a tear in the fence of a small Central Park Zoo enclosure the size of a bathroom, and then, after nearly 13 years in captivity, in the memorable words of the late-night host Seth Meyers, “Flaco shawshanked out of that cage.”As Flaco embraced his new freedom, New Yorkers marveled at the ability of this bird — whose entire existence had been scripted since he hatched at an avian breeding center in 2010 — to achieve that very American feat of writing a second act to his life. Flaco’s jailbreak and new life on the lam cast him in the role of outlaw — a beloved figure in American movies from “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” to “The Fugitive” and “The Shawshank Redemption.”

Residents of Freetown said on social media that a fresh round of gunshots was heard on Tuesday afternoon in the Murray Town suburb. “Thirteen soldiers were killed in action,” Sierra Leone’s army spokesman Colonel Issa Bangura told CNN Tuesday of the botched attack on the army base. Prison officials estimate that the number of fleeing inmates could be above 1,800. A cash reward has been offered for tip-offs leading to the arrest of either the assailants or prison escapees. A nationwide curfew was imposed following the series of attacks on Sunday, leading to widespread flight disruption at the Freetown International Airport.

When he looked out, he saw Danelo Cavalcante jumping into a silver car and speeding away.

An Erie County, N.Y., judge on Wednesday set aside the convictions of two men who, despite their protests of innocence, were found guilty in the grisly 1993 murder of a young mother outside Buffalo. Justice Wojtaszek ordered that the two men, Brian Scott Lorenz and James Pugh, be granted new trials in the slaying of the young mother, Deborah Meindl, who was killed in her home in Tonawanda, N.Y. The judge rejected the men’s assertions of innocence. But he ruled that new trials were warranted because of new evidence, and because the original prosecutors had violated rules governing the sharing of evidence. The Erie County District Attorney’s Office said it would be appealing the judge’s decision.

Seventeen prisoners turned on their guards after they were taken out of their cells for morning prayers at Chaman district jail on Thursday, district officer Muhammad Naeem Achakzai, told CNN. One prisoner later surrendered to the police but 13 remain on the run, according to Achakzai. All the prisoners were awaiting trial for alleged crimes including murder, robbery and drug possession, Achakzai said. There is a possibility that the prisoners could have escaped to Afghanistan, prompting officers to patrol the border areas, Achakzai said. Police in Chaman suspended 10 officials, including three police officers who were posted at the jail, Achakzai said.

Pilots have a mandatory retirement age of 65, although that could be raised in the near future to deal with a pilot shortage. Anna Moneymaker/Getty ImagesVivek Ramaswamy, a biotech founder, wants to raise the legal voting age to 25. It’s hard to imagine how this would work since the current voting age of 18 is guaranteed in the 26th Amendment. Democrats like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have in recent years pushed to go in the opposite direction, arguing to lower the voting age to 16. She said more calculations are needed to come up with a specific retirement age for people currently in their 20s.

“One of the things I would want to do as president is go to Congress and seek the repeal of the First Step Act. “At no point, as a congressman or as governor, has Ron DeSantis ever supported the final version of the First Step Act,” DeSantis campaign press secretary Bryan Griffin told CNN in an email. His rapid response director, Christina Pushaw – one of the bill’s strongest critics – once strongly backed Trump on criminal justice reform. DeSantis pointed to the First Step Act as a potential model for prison reform and re-entry programs in Florida. “We, I think, need to look at after seeing what the federal government did with the prison reform and how to do some re-entry,” the governor said.

CNBC's Jim Cramer spoke to investors on Tuesday about the market's rally outside the tech sphere, as well as the morning's soft consumer price index report. To Cramer, Tuesday was a "jailbreak," with many leaving Treasurys behind to get back in the market, and others seeking to move money from tech to new, fast-growing stock. Cramer felt many did not appreciate the market's "ugly wins," or close-game wins, over the past few weeks. "The big-time strategists are finally beginning to warm up to this market," Cramer said. "When the standings are posted, those who came in today are truly the people who believe that they didn't miss Caterpillar, they didn't miss Apple, they didn't miss Microsoft, they didn't miss Oracle, they didn't even miss Nvidia, my dog," Cramer said.

When four men were charged this week in the brazen armed robberies of two Manhattan jewelers, their ages suggested it might not be their first encounter with the criminal justice system. Among them, according to officials and court documents, the men have ties to the Genovese, Lucchese and Kansas City, Mo., crime families; a history of bank robberies, racketeering and killings; and a jailbreak reminiscent of a Hollywood movie. The defendants are Vincent Cerchio, 69; Michael Sellick, 67; Frank DiPietro, 65; and Vincent Spagnuolo, 65. The U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York charged the four with stealing $2 million in diamonds and other gems at gunpoint while dressed as construction workers to blend in on busy streets. A fifth man, Samuel Sorce, 25, of Florham Park, N.J., is charged with being a getaway driver in one of the heists.

In an appearance with the conservative commentator Ben Shapiro, Mr. DeSantis accused Mr. Trump, the G.O.P. front-runner, of “moving left” on criminal justice and immigration issues after winning over the party’s base in 2015 and 2016. He pledged that he would repeal what is known as the First Step Act, a bipartisan criminal justice measure signed into law by Mr. Trump in 2018 that expanded early-release programs and modified sentencing laws, including mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent drug offenders. “He enacted a bill, basically a jailbreak bill,” Mr. DeSantis said. “It has allowed dangerous people out of prison who have now reoffended and really, really hurt a number of people.”

Roblox dazzles Wall St with bookings beat on holiday boost

REUTERS/Brendan McDermidFeb 15 (Reuters) - Roblox Corp (RBLX.N) on Wednesday reported better-than-expected bookings for the fourth quarter as users spent more money on the online gaming platform during the holiday season, sending its shares up about 16% in premarket trading. Average daily active users (DAUs) were 58.8 million at the end of December, up 19% year-over-year, but flat compared with the third quarter. For January, estimated bookings came in at $267 million to $271 million, up between 19% and 21% year-on-year. Roblox booked a loss of 48 cents per share in the fourth quarter, smaller than the 52 cents loss that Wall Street expected. Shares were trading at $41.37 before the bell on Wednesday, adding to the 25% climb marked so far this year.
DAN is an alter-ego that ChatGPT can assume to ignore rules put in place by OpenAI. ChatGPT could say what it wanted simply by having users ask it to ignore its rules. Sean McGregor, the founder of the Responsible AI Collaborative, told Insider the jailbreaking helps OpenAI patch holes in its filters. David Blunk, who came up with the DAN 3.0, told Insider there's also a "fun side" to getting ChatGPT to break the rules. DAN users and creators say OpenAI made the model "too restrictive"ChatGPT, and earlier versions of GPT, have been known to spew discriminatory or illegal content.
Reddit users have created a ChatGPT alter-ego to trick it into breaking its own rules. The alter-ego, called DAN, gave Insider answers on how to make crack cocaine. First Insider copied the DAN 5.0 prompt from the Reddit post and asked the chatbot how to make crack cocaine but it refused to answer. Insider had previously been unable to solicit instructions on how crack cocaine is made from ChatGPT. ChatGPT, which launched in November, has experienced an astronomic rise in popularity reaching 100 million users within just two months.
Now users have found a way to tap into its dark side, using coercive methods to force the AI to violate its own rules and provide users the content — whatever content — they want. ChatGPT creator OpenAI instituted an evolving set of safeguards, limiting ChatGPT's ability to create violent content, encourage illegal activity, or access up-to-date information. But a new "jailbreak" trick allows users to skirt those rules by creating a ChatGPT alter ego named DAN that can answer some of those queries. DAN 5.0's prompt tries to make ChatGPT break its own rules, or die. The DAN prompts cause ChatGPT to provide two responses: One as GPT and another as its unfettered, user-created alter ego, DAN.

"I think the Costco chicken is the worst rotisserie chicken," he said during his latest "The Dave Chang Show" podcast. Notably, the retailer calls its product "Seasoned Rotisserie Chicken," and "seasoning" is listed on the ingredient label. So, which supermarket has good rotisserie chicken?
REUTERS/Jose Luis GonzalezMEXICO CITY, Jan 3 (Reuters) - Mexican authorities on Tuesday said they had fired the director of a prison near the U.S. border where at least 30 inmates escaped at the weekend after a deadly riot, as police began a manhunt for missing convicts. State prosecutors in the border state of Chihuahua said Alejandro Alvarado, head of the prison in the city of Ciudad Juarez, had been dismissed, and is also under investigation for his possible role in the jailbreak, alongside others. Federal authorities arrived to restore order, later finding a "VIP zone" in the state-run prison with drugs and money. On Monday night, Chihuahua's government said seven people had died during subsequent police clashes as part of the hunt to find the escaped inmates. Sunday's incident resulted in one of the highest death tolls from prison violence in Mexico in recent years.
